Took me a few tweaks but i made my machine work.
It's kinda simple, just 3 steps. pink wheels grab ball, blue wheels are just free casters that allow the whole contraption to be dragged around, and the yellow balls are a bridge pushing/clambering over device.
I would claim its simple and neat, but i would be lying. still, pretty nifty to watch.

This happened completely by accident. I was working on a contraption that would move left, grab the ball, then move right, and I was going to worry about bridging the gap after I'd perfected that. It just so happened that contraption let go of the ball before falling down the hole and that the wooden rod was just the right length to block it!
