Boy you've got yourself a challenge... I think you have the right kind of idea.

Maybe some kind of extender powered by a rail rider that can go up and down.
Attach some kind of extender to the rail rider http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11280867
Like this http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11280871 The extender just needs to extend to the right more. paralellograms?
http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11280875 more powah

and here is a good start http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11280877

I think an efficient method would be to make a monorail loop with a powered wheel inside the loop like such:

Of course the goal piece and wheel would need to be tighter together in order to ride the monorail. The illustration was just a rough sketch of the idea.

But just think about the peice count, would we have enough to make that whole loop?

Yeah, easily. The monorail needn't be 5px length sticks.

The parts in red need to be raised, obv.

Do you plan on using supports like I have drawn with the yellow?

I made a version of Unpossible with a bigger build area, then we can work backwards, and more easily express ideas:
http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?levelId=570156

EDIT
Possible idea: http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11281505
Need someone awesome to move it over there and shrink it down etc, but the idea is to use the ledge to transport the ball, rather than sticks.

It does one rotation, but then it falls out, otherwise it could work!

Here's something, using the parallel lifter.

Edit: Something bigger on the ledge....
http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11281745

Edit2: http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11281767
Power...

Edit 3: http://www.fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=11281821
Victory! No boomerang yet....

Edit 4: Makes 4 rotations guaranteed and hasn't gotten stuck in the 40 min I've been running it...

3205t on my Mac.

I've been running it for about an hour and its still not stuck, and it's still solving.

Here is a SS after about an hour.

How bout you add a wood diverter so that when the ball is close to the build area, it has to go into it.

So can anyone do it faster? Or with fewer pieces?

Yes it works, but I think it is too slow to leave it at that.

Edit: Wins and booms a lot more often

Thought this would make it faster, but it doesn't work.
