It is amazing how many times I see a winning solution and say "I tried that exact same thing" but could not get it to go. My advice to others is if you think it could work, then it can work. You just have to spend the hours pixel tweaking until it does work.

point coordinates

Postby Rube_goldberg on Wed Mar 11, 2009 1:18 pm

Thanks for the clarification on hands off, you can indeed attach to the goal object and still receive hands off. Sadly for me, what I haven't been able to do is return the goal object to where it belongs only a few grid units away. Nor can I rebuild my complex and very precisely timed contraption around an unmoved goal object.

FC absolutely needs a point editor. It would be an [b]extremely[\b] simple addition that would eliminate the endless frustration that comes from trying to make fine adjustments to points in a contraption. You need merely click a joint to highlight it, which would then display the point's exact coordinates and allow you to enter any valid value or move the point 1 grid unit at a time in any direction.

A quick way to implement the functionality of this without having to modify the game would be to allow contraptions to be exported to and imported from a text file.

Sounds good in theory, but at what level of precision? A full pixel (where pixel is the size of an actual pixel at regular zoom)? One hundredth of a pixel? How about a millionth? I believe it currently goes 11...ELEVEN decimal places. That's...uh, a really small number. That probably explains why two identical looking designs have different results.

That said, I agree that a snap-to-grid function would be nice (as long as it can be disabled).

The grid function would not be a good idea. It would #1 be annoying when not trying to snap to or tweaking and #2 would take away from the "home-made" look of all contraptions.
The perfect right angles would make the contraptions look too professional. FC would lose it's basic charm.
I would enjoy an option to toggle snapping though.

I can't get my canyon below a 20. I am itching to see other people's designs there so they can show me up, but it seems utterly impossible. Most likely because I can't figure out a worthwhile green solution. I thinks it's just impossible to do it efficiently without at least two powered wheels.

No thanks sgt. I feel doubtful that anyone will get negative, but as my score gets closer and closer to negative, I'm starting to think that I will be greatly surprised since i haven't done very well in previous comps.. Only got 13th in the hap final :\

Does Canyon qualify for a Champ badge? The goal object rolls through, but doesn't stop, so I'm guessing it doesn't, but I want to be sure.

Nup. Has been mentioned before. The ball falls into the abyss on the other side.

Thanks Bloobeard. I'm a newb on this Forum, so I figured it would be easier to ask than to fish through the pages and pages of chat looking.

It's definitely not impossible.

"Sounds good in theory, but at what level of precision? A full pixel (where pixel is the size of an actual pixel at regular zoom)?"

I never mentioned pixels. Pixels are the problem, they are all we have to go by. The game itself doesn't give a flip about pixels, it uses a Cartesian coordinate system. You think in terms of pixels because that is all you see on the screen, but let me assure you, there aren't any little elves stacking pixels and knocking them over on the other side of the screen. There is actual mathematics going on behind the scenes, and every point in every contraption has an exact abscissa and ordinate (x and y coordinate) stored in a variable.

All I'm suggesting is that we be given access to that value so that we might more easily modify our contraptions. I'm not suggesting any modifications be made to the game that would change its operation in any way. We already define the points of our contraptions and are free to adjust them at will. Having access to the actual coordinate values of the points would merely aid us in making those adjustments.

I'm probably being retarded but I don't understand how this works.
I have tweaked for hours, moved links around then back, deleted and rebuilt contraptions, etc. and 1) I get the exact same results from the exact same on-screen positions and 2)the smallest increment in any direction appears to be more than one pixel

I think I may get a negative score... :)
This is my "Be A Champ"...

*edit by Poots* Please do not post contest solves. It is pretty easy to steal designs if you give them away.
(I don't think anyone was going to steal my almost working 50 pieces design. But if you say so. :) )

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a negative overall score? It would be an amazing feat :P.

I am quite certain that there are a few people with negative scores. And there is still over a week to tweak.

is anyone else really annoyed that:

a) you know you won't win;
b) you've done some WORD FILTERED-hot solutions which will look stone-age when the winners are revealed;
c) you still have to wait a week for your total humiliation.
