Infinite solving

Postby alphacrow on Wed Oct 08, 2008 2:45 pm

I was thinking about whether it was possible to bring the object ball to the goal, back to the start, and then repeat ad infinitum.

Since it actually running infinitely is silly to test, I've decided to call it a victory if it goes to the goal and back 5 times, as anything after that is just silly tweaking. It proved to be a fun little diversion, and here are my results for the first page of levels. I've labeled the interesting ones:

Rolling away (success): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2651838
Reach up (success): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1980495
Mind the gap (success/interesting): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1979838
Junkyard: Still working on this one, but I think a strategy similar to The Wall might work
The Wall (success/interesting): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2656928
On a Roll (success): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2657267
Full-Up (success/interesting): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2381008
Higher (success): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2381141
Around the Bend (unsuccessful, but getting there): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2687542
Up The Hump (unsuccessful, but close): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2697291
Mission to Mars (success): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2381586

And some submissions from others:

Four Balls (Moral victory): http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1603521 (hurkyl)
Big Ball: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=3053137 (hurkyl)
Handling: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=2772233 (flagitious)
Tube: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=2777216 (flagitious)
Back and Forth: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=2826082 (flagitious)
U-Turn: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=2940245 (mandydax)

Please feel free to contribute your own! I didn't really try anything on the second page, and would be pretty impressed by any solutions there (I think U-Turn would be the first).

Up the hump isn't working, but otherwise very cool. I'd argue that these qualify for :champ: :boomerang:

Another tube solution, without a bottom! http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2808888
It does eventually fall, but not until after meeting the requirements!

Here's an old one of mine for four balls: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1603521
It doesn't bring all of the balls out 5 times, though, I think.

Here is another tube with no bottom that goes on forever. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2817281

The four balls is pretty cool, although not totally sure what counts and what doesn't for levels with multiple balls.

Here is back and forth: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2826082

Bumpity. Note, edited prev post, so back&forth one wouldn't get stuck ever (tested for about 1hour)

Took a lot of tweaking, but I got U-Turn to work: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2940245
I tested it overnight. :D

Just did Higher: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2945413. Um, no, it's not meant to evoke that kind of imagery. It's a vertical battering ram! Yeah, that's the ticket!

Rolling Away: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=2946507 Actually that gets stuck after a dozen or so times. Edit: Fixed!

I was just trying an infinite On a Roll (not sure if it's infinite yet) and discovered this post.
I like the Back & Forth especially.

I did U Turn in 9 a while back: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=842790

Made a minor change to the length of your ramp on Up the Hump and it was running really smoothly with three cycles and was on it's way to another...and then Kaplooey! Worth watching. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=7426402

Okay, got rid of the powered wheel bomb and made another small tweak...http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=7426482. Worked pretty well, making 4.5 trips (this time without blowing up) but on the last trip it moved the ramp out of the way and couldn't get back over the hump. Urgh. A minor tweak should get it to work.
