Something new? (Boomerang Challenge)

Postby Digrae on Tue Jul 29, 2008 12:33 am

I'm somewhat new to these forums, so I don't know if this has been tried, but I was fiddling around tonight and thinking about the "champion" challenges, where you leave the objective in the goal. Those are fun and all, but some of the levels it's almost a given that the ball will stay in the goal. Then I thought to myself "Self, what if I played one of those levels and put the ball back in the workshop when I was done?" This sounded like a new thing to me, so I thought I'd have a go at it.

I picked sort of an easy one to start, and it's ugly, but here's my solution for Big Ball.

As suggested, here's the list of completed levels.

01. Rolling Away - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=122148 : Renus
02. Reach Up - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=122276 : Renus
03. Mind the Gap - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=121223 : Maestro
04. Junkyard - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=124992 : Renus
05. The Wall - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=125711 : Renus
06. On a Roll - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=126227 : Renus
07. Full-Up - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=126922 : Renus
08. Higher - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=127016 : Renus
09. Around the Bend - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=127369 : Renus
10. Up the Hump - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=133388 (2nd completed, but first to technically settle completely in the workshop) : Heloed
11. Mission to Mars - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=128981 : Digrae
12. Up the Stairs - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=133831 : Stutesman
13. Big Ball - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=120615 : Digrae
14. Four Balls - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=139936 (This one is awesome) : Jasonharper. A physics update broke it so it wouldn't stay in the workshop at the end and since this is one of my favorite contraptions ever, I tweaked it in the interest of posterity. Left the original up though. It's genius. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1477540 Fixed.
15. Down Under - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=136724 : Digrae
16. Awash - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=179822 (Be patient, it works!) : Sccook
17. Handling - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=128299 : Stutesman
18. Tube - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=127932 : Maestro
19. Back and Forth - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=197786 and http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=197921 Joint effort : Digrae/Sccook
20. Unpossible - http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=169046 : Torquejunky

Solutions for all 20 in under a week. Whoot!

I really like this idea. What are you going to name this new challenge?
Anyway, here's Mind the Gap:

Hadn't really considered it! Call it the "Put your toys away when you're done" challenge or some such...

I REALLY want to solve 4 balls this way, because it seems like it would be ipecac, but I'm not sure there's enough workspace. The most promising idea that occurred to me was a simple flinger and a winding chain to reel a basket back, but the chain gets in the way too much and the goal is too small to hold my basket with a wheel. I tried flinging a basket with no wheel, but I just run into different space issues.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=121665 is sort of a hodgepodge of failures, but you can see what I was after! It's the middle of the night and I'm going to sleep. I shall play with it again tomorrow.

You can't make a winch with water rods, as they'll just pass through the pulley.

Great idea! Probably one of the most difficult challenges too, considering what you have to do for some of the later levels.

I'll add this to the "officially sanctioned" list once you settle on a name. "Boomerang Challenge" sounds pretty catchy.

Heh, yeah, I know... I was trying for like half wood and half water rods in varying combinations for a while because I needed balls to pass through part of it and have part of it wind... etc. It was a 3 in the morning design and prolly just needs to be entirely rethought.

Also, yeah.. the Boomerang Challenge is a dandy suggestion. Call it that.

Another failed hump... tried the winch, can't get enough power.

Digrae, you may want to edit that list into your OP.

Good idea. Yep

Also, tweaked an overly complicated one I started last night before I realized someone else had made a much better one. I shall share it anyway, in all of it's mediocrity!
